Communications Center Our county-wide Public Safety Communications & Emergency Management Center is well underway. Fifteen of our thirty-nine municipalities are currently receiving service through this center and capacity exists in the current facility to serve approximately 30,000 to 50,000 more of our population (~ 1 to 5 more municipalities). Looking to the future, a needs assessment has been completed with the assistance of Kimball & Associates, consultative experts in public safety communications, technology, operations, facilities, and management. Output from this analysis included municipal public safety volumes, capabilities, and costs; and an evaluation of the same for the county plus the operational, organizational, and technical abilities needed to serve as a county-wide facility. Consolidation options, building concept plans, communications center programming (such as adjacencies, ergonomics, security, operational functionality) and preliminary site evaluation rounded out the study. Expanded county-wide collaboration on emergency response is essential given priorities for local, state and national preparedness. It is acknowledged throughout Morris County that consolidation of command & control, communications interoperability, and shared costs, risks, & services are good things to pursue. Many municipalities are or will be seeking alternatives to their escalating training, technology, and labor costs as well. However, full county-wide implementation must be phased to allow for adequate physical space, technical capacity, and staffing.
